Soccer 

The men’s soccer team finished the regular season with a pair of draws in away matches. Mateo Kostering tallied the Mariner’s only goal in the Oct. 20 game against UBC-Okanagan, off a great cross from AJ Kambere. VIU nearly hung on for the win, but surrendered a late goal in extra time for the 1–1 draw.

The team travelled to Thompson Rivers University the following afternoon to take on the Wolfpack in the final match of the season. After allowing the first goal on a penalty kick, the M’s responded when Jordan Degraff knotted the game at 1–1 for their second draw of the weekend.

Badminton 

VIU’s badminton team competed in their first tournament of the season Oct. 19–20 at TRU. A rebuilding year for the team, the men did well to win a hard-fought match against Kwantlen in team play before being eliminated in the second round. Pat Thompson placed 6th in the men’s individual event.

For the women, Eunice Chan earned second place in the individual portion, while she and Melissa Liew combined to finish 6th in the doubles event.

The Mariners host the next PacWest badminton tournament Nov. 3–4, with games going on all day in the gymnasium.

Golf 

The Mariners men’s golf team travelled to Oshawa, Ontario for the CCAA National Championship earlier this month, qualifying after their third place finish at Provincials.

VIU finished in 10th place as a team, with third-year Matt Haddad the top Mariner at 25th place. Haddad scored +14 in the three rounds while recording seven birdies. Morgan Decksheimer finshined in 28th, Kristian Hrabowych in 34th, Kristian Hrabowych in 57th, and Mike Hrabowych at 68th.

The course was tough—of the 76 golfers, none succeeded in shooting above par. Colton Kalkanis of Georgian College won the tournament at +1, with shooting an impressive 70 on the second round.

Basketball 

The 2012 basketball is already underway and VIU, with the next home games going Friday, Nov. 2 against Camosun for both the men’s and women’s teams.

The men began the season with a good-natured match against Mariners Alumni, defeating the past M’s 87–68. Guard Brandon Jones notched 23 points for VIU while Mariner’s-great Jason Hubbs scored 25 points for the alumni. The team then travelled to Northwest University in Washington for a pair of games on Oct. 22 and 23. The M’s lost both matches by scores of 77–71 and 70–51.

The ladies hosted the Lewis and Clark Pioneers from Portland for a scrimmage to start the season, falling 79–45 in the tune-up match. The Mariners then competed in an exhibition tournament at Camosun College. Catch the next instalment of the rivalry this Friday at 6 p.m. in the gym.
