Every September the campuses of Vancouver Island University are flooded by an influx of new students. VIU is a big institution with a lot to offer academically and many extracurricular groups and activities students may choose to become involved with.
One great way for new students and those continuing their education at VIU this September to stay active and have fun are the Intramural Leagues, Tournaments and Special Events hosted by Campus Rec.
For those interested in committing to League play there will be three options as Volleyball, Basketball and Indoor Soccer Leagues will all be in full swing this fall. The Volleyball League is set to begin play first on September 16th, Basketball the following day and Indoor Soccer on the 18th. All Leagues cost a fee of $25 for students to join or $50 for community members.
Students can also choose to get a team together and register for one of the varied and exciting Intramural Tournaments Campus Rec has organized this fall. Tournament action kicks off Sunday, September 29th with Slo Pitch Baseball and continues Saturday, October 5th with 5-A-Side Outdoor Soccer. Gridiron fans can get their fill of the action on Sunday, October 13th with the 5-A-Side Flag Football Tournament, and finally on Wednesday, November 20th things get really serious with the crown jewel of all sporting competitions Dodgeball.
Also for those looking to satisfy their competitive urges in a less athletic way Campus Rec will be hosting a Poker Tournament on Thursday, November 7th.
Athletic Tournaments will cost $60 per team of students to register or $10 per community member while the Poker Tournament will cost $20 for students and $40 for community members. All the tournaments are sure to be great fun and an excellent opportunity to meet your fellow students.
In addition to the Leagues and Tournaments available this fall Campus Rec has also organized a number of Special Events that students may choose to take part in as well. The fun starts on Sunday, September 22nd when students will have an opportunity to go Skydiving. On Friday, September 27th for First Year students only Campus Rec will be hosting VIU’s very own version of the Amazing Race while those interested in Snorkeling with the Seals should be sure to mark Saturday, September 28th on their calendar. On Sunday, October 27th students will have the opportunity to participate in a trip to Wildplay Adventure Park and on Sunday, November 3rd students can get some of their mid semester stress out with a round of Paintball! Campus Rec is also working on organizing a Canucks Road Trip to a game this upcoming season, dates still to be announced.
